I'm a second year PhD student of IR group, I'm working on the efficiency and scalability issues for large-scale DB+IR systems. Traditionally, DB and IR are two different research areas. DB technology is driven by logical abstraction and scalability. IR technology is driven by unstructured data volumes and relevance-based ranking. Therefore, DB research is interested in expressiveness and scalability measures, whereas IR research focusses on effectiveness (quality). Integrating DB and IR technology caught focus in the recent years, two kinds of integrating approaches are popular, the contest focuses on which appoach is more efficient and is more scalable in nowadays large-scale applications. We currently working on the benchmarking methodology for such systems, and then introduce the possible solutions for the integrated DB+IR system.
