Getting to Como

By Plane

The nearest airports to Como are:

• Milan Malpensa (MPX Tel: +39 02 74852200)
  • The best way to reach Como from Malpensa Airport by train is the following:
    • Take the Malpensa Express to Saronno (~20 mins).
    • Transfer at Saronno and take the train Saronno-Como (30-40 mins) .
    • Total duration (including connection time): 60-80 mins.

  • By car via the autostrada (40-60 minutes, toll costs 1.70€).
  • Coach (3 times daily) or private coach firms outside airport.

By Train

The Servizio Ferroviario Regionale connects Como by train to other major cities in Lombardy (R lines).
Services are provided by:

• Trenitalia (a.k.a. Ferrovie dello Stato: FS), Como S. Giovanni Station.
• LeNORD, Como Lago Station.
•

By Car

The E35 motorway runs past Como from Milan, and goes on into Switzerland. There are three exits to Como; take Como North (marked ultima uscita per l'Italia - last exit to Italy) before Switzerland to get to the lake shore. (toll costs 1.70€ for the A9 stretch, 1.10€ for the A4 section, about 1.50€ for the E35 section west of Milan)

Venue

The conference is located on the 1^st floor of the Teatro Sociale (Piazza Giuseppe Verdi, Como - Tel: +39 031 5798814).
The attendees should proceed to the 1^st floor through the stairs (or lift), the registration desk is in Sala Conversazione at the end of the corridor (please see diagram below).

Getting Around

The centre of Como is rather compact and can be covered easily on foot.

Buses

• The local public transport network counts 10 urban (within city limits) lines and 'extra-urban' (crossing city limits) (C) lines connecting Como with most of its province centres. They are provided by SPTLinea.

    Note: Urban bus tickets have to be bought before boarding the bus in news-stands or bars, a ticket for a single ride costs 1€, while a ticket for 75 minutes costs 1.05€. The complete ticket fares can be found here.
    
    
• Ferrovie Nord Milano also provides other bus lines connecting Como to Varese in substitution of the original railway line that was dismissed in the 1960s.
• The funicolare (funicular) connects the centre of Como with Brunate, a small village (1800 inhabitants) on a mountain at 715 meters above sea level. The journey takes about 7 minutes and the view is worth the trip: it can also be the starting point for a stroll on the mountains. Timetables can be found here.

Boats

The boats and aliscafi of Navigazione Lago di Como connect the town with most of the villages sitting on the shores of the lake, the former are slower and right for sightseeing, the latter are faster and make less stops.

Shuttle to AVSS

ICDSC 2009 and AVSS 2009 will be held in Italy in nearby locations during the week starting on August, 30.

To encourage participation to both events, a free shuttle bus service will be available on September 2 for the transfer from Como (ICDSC) to Genova (AVSS). The shuttle will depart from Como at 11.45 am and will arrive in Genova in time for the first AVSS 2009 Plenary Session. A free lunch bag will be distributed during the transfer.

To register for this free shuttle, tick the box "Como-Genova shuttle bus on September, 2" when you register for ICDSC 2009. The service is free of charge for participants registered to both events.
