The Big Draw

As part of the 2007 Big Draw, organised by the Campaign for Drawing, this project is producing new interactive visual tools for children and professionals to explore and understand similarities and differences between animals, particularly during early development, and how these have arisen through evolution. A mutli-disciplinary team including artist Tessa Garland (of Bow Arts Trust), psychologist Dr Pat Healey who works on the science of drawing (at Queen Mary, University of London) and developmental biologists from QMUL led by Dr Greg Elgar, are collaborating to look at the way that scientists use drawing as part of scientific investigation: for example, in sketching the networks of interaction between genes and regulatory elements that govern the development of organisms. In addition, the project is examining the contribution that artistic practice can make to science and its interpretation through drawing games for young people, drawing workshops for scientists and digital drawing tools. A DVD for secondary schools will disseminate the processes and results of this collaborative project.
