University of London
Taster Courses
The University of London Taster Course Programme, gives students the opportunity to learn at first-hand
about Computer Science and to sample life at University. The Programme offers short
courses to sixth-form students towards the end of Year 12 to introduce them to university degree courses.
The Taster Courses brochure can be accessed online at the London Taster Courses homepage [external link].
The website has information about the courses available, and from the end of April will show which courses still have places available. Applications can be made online, or using the printable form in the brochure.
An example Taster course offered by the Department of Computer Science is:
What Makes Computers Compute?
The answer is the programs they run. Being able to know how to make a computer (be it a PC, an iPod, or even a
cyborg) do what you want it to do needs an understanding of how to give it the right instructions, and how to
write computer code. In this one-day taster course you will have the fantastic opportunity to gain an insight into
the fascinating and highly innovative world of Computer Science. We will show you how to beat your friends at
simple games the computer science way, how to make sure computers are friends rather than foes, and what you can
expect on a University course studying computer science.
The course is intended for students with an interest in computing, and who have at least a grade C GCSE in mathematics. Further information is available at the London Taster Courses homepage [external link]
National Science and Engineering Week
