There are a number of key skills that employers look for when recruiting graduates.
These are typically categorised as intellectual, interpersonal and managerial skills. For a career in computing, the top ten highly regarded skills are: problem solving, communication and presentation skills, analytical skills, business awareness, numeracy and literacy, technical knowledge, creativity, team working, leadership and career motivation.

All our courses are designed with these skills in mind, providing you with firm grounding in the necessary technical knowledge while helping you to develop interpersonal and managerial skills through assessed course work.
Through laboratory exercises you will gain experience in the practical applications of your newly learnt technical and numeracy skills. In your individual and group projects you will put your problem solving, technical and analytical skills to use when designing and writing software and you will develop skills such as literacy for writing reports and communications skills for presenting your work.

Lectures, projects and courses like our Entrepreneurship in IT will give you the necessary knowledge for your business awareness skills. Through group work and group projects you will gain experience in team working, develop managerial skills (including time management, organisation, planning) and have the opportunity to learn leadership. Our professional development study programme will also help you master your communication skills and career motivation.

The Careers Service at Queen Mary can also help you find vocational work that will support your study and future careers plan. Queen Mary also offers a wide range of activities and societies, which gives you a chance to meet other students and set up activities that are of interest to you.
