Oussama posing

I am currently preparing for a PhD at the School of Electornic Engineering and Computer Science [EECS] at Queen Mary University of London [QMUL]. I am a member of the Interaction Media & Communication [IMC] and the Interactional Sound research groups, and I work under the supervision of Dr. Nick Bryan-Kinns and Dr. Tony Stockman. I am a member of the IBScientific editorial team. This is my CV.

Current Research

My PhD research investigates aspects of diagram accessibility when using sound as the main means of interaction. The research aims to empirically explore the potential of using auditory display for accessing and manipulating graphically represented information both in individual and collaborative usage scenarios.

In other (simpler) words, I look into how sound can be used to represent diagrams; how interaction with diagrams (inspecting, constructing, editing diagrams) can be supported through audio-only interfaces, and how the dynamics of collaboration is affected when groups of people work together on auditory diagrams.

A list of my publications can be found here, or further down this page.

A paper that I published in 2008 received the prize of International Excellence in HCI Research [more].

    Teaching

I also work as a teaching assistant (TA) for a number of modules at the Department of Computer Science and the Department of Electornic Engineering at QMUL. Some of the modules I assist are:

  • DCS224: Graphical User Interface Design
A course for both second year undergraduates and MScIT postgraduates which introduces the interface design process with an emphasis on human factors.

  • DCS302: Multimedia
A course for third year undergraduates which introduces the multimedia development process.

  • DCS100: Procedural Programming
An introductory programming course for first year undergraduates.

  • ELE304: Software Engineering
A course for second year undergraduates which introduces necessary techqiues for developing complex and high quality software systems. The course runs at the department of Electornic Engineering [ELEC].

  • DCS114: Essential Object-Oriented Programming
A course for first year undegraduates that supports students develop fundamental skills related to reading, writing, describing, structuring and reasoning about programs.

  • DCS144: Object-Oriented Programming
A course for first year undergraduates which introduces the main concepts of OOP in Java.
